New to IPTV in the UK? This glossary explains every term you'll encounter — from M3U playlists and XTREAM Codes to MAG boxes, anti-freeze technology, and the UK 3pm blackout rule. Bookmark it as your IPTV reference.

IPTV

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. It's a method of delivering live TV channels and on-demand video over the internet (using IP packets) instead of via traditional satellite, terrestrial aerial, or coaxial cable. UK households use IPTV to access 50,000+ channels through any internet-connected device.

M3U / M3U8

An M3U (or M3U8) is a plain-text playlist file containing the URLs of every channel in your IPTV subscription. IPTV apps like TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, and Smart IPTV import M3U URLs to populate your channel list. M3U8 is the UTF-8 encoded version, used for playlists with international characters.

EPG

EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide — the on-screen TV-style schedule showing what's playing now and what's coming up on every channel. UK IPTV providers deliver EPG data via XMLTV files. Apps like TiviMate render EPG as a Sky-Q-style grid.

XTREAM Codes

XTREAM Codes is the most widely-used IPTV provisioning protocol. Instead of importing an M3U URL, you log in with a server URL, username, and password — and your IPTV app pulls channels, EPG, and VOD automatically. Faster, more secure, and easier to update than M3U playlists.

VOD

VOD stands for Video on Demand — the library of movies, TV box sets, and series available to stream whenever you want, similar to Netflix or Prime Video. A premium IPTV UK service typically includes 190,000+ VOD titles alongside live channels.

STB / Set-Top Box

A Set-Top Box (STB) is any device that sits between your internet connection and your TV to decode IPTV streams. Common UK examples: Amazon Firestick, Nvidia Shield, MAG box, Formuler Z, Buzz TV. Smart TVs with native apps can replace an STB entirely.

MAG Box

MAG (made by Infomir) is a family of dedicated IPTV set-top boxes — MAG 322, MAG 524, MAG 540, MAG 544. They run a stripped-down Linux OS optimised purely for IPTV via Stalker portal or M3U. Popular in Europe; less common in the UK where Firestick and Smart TVs dominate.

Stalker Portal

Stalker is a portal-based IPTV protocol used primarily on MAG boxes. Instead of M3U or XTREAM Codes, the box authenticates against a portal URL using its MAC address. Most modern UK IPTV apps no longer support Stalker — XTREAM Codes has replaced it.

H.265 / HEVC

H.265 (High Efficiency Video Coding, also called HEVC) is the modern video codec that allows 4K UHD streams to fit through normal UK broadband. H.265 reduces file size by ~50% versus H.264 at the same quality — making it essential for genuine 4K IPTV.

Anti-Freeze Technology

A marketing term used by premium IPTV UK providers (including IPTVServiceUK) for combined techniques that prevent buffering: load-balanced 10 Gbps servers, redundant CDN routing, automatic stream-quality adaptation, and H.265 hardware decoding. Together they keep streams smooth during peak Premier League matches.

TiviMate

The most popular IPTV player app for Android TV and Firestick in the UK. Free version handles basic playback; Premium (£4.49 one-off) unlocks multi-view (up to 9 streams), local DVR recording, advanced EPG, and custom channel groups. Considered the gold standard.

IPTV Smarters Pro

A free, cross-platform IPTV player available on Firestick, Android TV, iOS, Samsung Smart TV, and LG webOS. Simpler than TiviMate but works on more device types. XTREAM Codes login is the standard setup method.

Catch-Up TV

Catch-Up TV (also called timeshift) lets you replay programmes that aired earlier — typically up to 7 days back. Quality IPTV UK providers offer 7-day catch-up on major UK channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky), letting you scroll back through the EPG to watch missed shows.

Multi-View / Multi-Screen

A feature in TiviMate and a few other IPTV apps that lets you watch up to 9 channels simultaneously on one screen — perfect for Saturday football fans following multiple Premier League matches at once.

PPV

Pay-Per-View — major boxing fights, UFC events, WWE specials, and some football PPV games. UK Sky Box Office charges £19.99-£24.95 per PPV event; premium IPTV UK subscriptions include all major PPVs at no extra charge.

CDN

Content Delivery Network. A geographically distributed server network that streams IPTV from the closest physical location to your TV. UK IPTV providers using London/Manchester CDN servers (like IPTVServiceUK) deliver lower latency and fewer drops than providers serving UK from US-only servers.

3pm Blackout

A UK-only rule that prevents domestic broadcasters (Sky, TNT/BT Sport) from airing live football kicked off at 3pm on Saturdays. The rule exists to protect lower-league match-day attendance. IPTV services bypass this by using international broadcasters' feeds (beIN, Canal+, etc.).

Buffering

When an IPTV stream pauses to load more video data. Causes include slow broadband, congested 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, ISP throttling, software-decoder fallback, an overloaded IPTV server, or a CDN routing issue. Quality UK providers solve this with anti-freeze tech and UK-routed CDN.

Now You Know the Lingo

Try the best IPTV UK service — XTREAM Codes, full EPG, anti-freeze H.265 streams.
